MEET OUR TEAM – STUDENT PLACEMENTS

Rory and Matt reflect on their student placements here at WHP!

WHP
Rory, from University of Bath, has been working at our Leeds office for nearly a year.

🟢 What is your biggest achievement in WHP?
My biggest achievement is the independence I have gained when carrying out design work. I now feel like I can confidently undertake a design in accordance with the design brief, and control the process through drafting and approval before issuing to clients. Seeing the solutions I have designed being implemented is a very rewarding feeling.

🔴 What is your largest learning curve in WHP?
My biggest learning curve at WHP has been how to interact and form good working relationships with clients. Every client is different and some may require different forms/levels of interaction. I have learnt how to convey engineering information to technical and non-technical clients to ensure everybody working on the project is kept up to date and has full understanding of any challenges that may arise.

🔵 What is your best memory in WHP?
My best memory at WHP is going to watch the demolition of 3 cooling towers at Ferrybridge power station. I carried out the CAT 3 check of the explosive method that was to be used, so to see the demolition go exactly as planned felt very rewarding, as well as being an incredible spectacle to watch.
WHP
Matt, from University of Bath, has just finished his placement year with us in our Bristol office! Let's see what he says about his time at WHP!

🟢 What is your biggest achievement in WHP?
Taking ownership for my own designs. Before starting at WHP I didn’t realise how much responsibility I would have. I enjoy the process from start to finish whether it is communicating with the client or senior engineers to ensure my design satisfies all parties and most importantly works.

🔴 What is your largest learning curve in WHP?
Working with CAD technicians to draw and model my designs in a clear and efficient manner. During my time at university I have to draw my own concepts, at WHP I have learnt to effectively communicate with CAD technicians and it has shown me that with active teamwork we can solve unforeseen issues - especially with 3D modelling.

🔵 Your best memory in WHP?
Going to Hinkley Point C for a site visit. It is possibly the biggest site I will visit in my career and it was amazing to be able to see where the designs I had worked on were going to be built - currently in a big hole in the ground!
