SummarySummary
High Speed Two (HS2) is Britain’s new high-speed railway connecting London and Birmingham. Wentworth are currently working on several sub lots along Section C2 C3 and have recently been involved at NCA where we have undertaken several temporary works designs ranging from reinforcement stability to assessment of bridge girders in the temporary condition.

Most recently, Wentworth undertook the CAT3 check of a 345 metre long viaduct deck slide weighing 4500 tonnes over a road and railway near Wendover, Buckinghamshire. Unlike traditional methods, the concrete and steel deck were assembled to full length before the slide began.

Wentworth are remarkably proud to be a part of this engineering feat which will create capacity on a congested network by proving faster, zero carbon journeys between our two largest cities.

Key scopeKey scope

  • Technical Reviews: undertake independent peer reviews of designs and provide technical advice to EKFB.
  • Structural Assessment: stability assessments of bridge girders and precast concrete bridge U-beams during the temporary condition, including the design of temporary support systems to ensure overall stability.
  • Temporary Works: Reinforcement stability of abutment walls and foundations.
  • Geotechnical Engineering: design of working platforms, earth retaining structures, slope stability, utility and ground movement assessments.

Key Challenges and SolutionsKey Challenges and Solutions

  • Complex Structural Assessments: due to the complexity of the structure, advanced engineering and finite element modelling were undertaken to carry out the assessments.
  • Working with External Stakeholders and Multiple Contractors: Working in a rigorous environment, Wentworth were engaged to act as lead TW designer and checker of schemes which meant undertaking a holistic design approach to ensure all elements were joined up together.
