SummarySummary
The A30 Chiverton to Carland Cross Scheme encompasses the construction of a new 8.7-mile dual carriageway. The scheme also includes the replacement of several roundabouts, the construction of new bridges, access roads and junctions, as well as the retention of the A30 for local traffic. The scheme’s objectives are to reduce congestion, connect communities, and improve safety, operation and efficiency.
Having been awarded the scheme by Highways England, the Costain/Jacobs partnership appointed Keltbray to deliver 14 bridge structures in various forms. Wentworth supported the partnership in developing and delivering engineering-led structural bridge solutions, maximising the use of modularisation and modern methods of construction to identify and construct standard bridge elements to assure greater buildability and quality within the overall schedule.

Delivering valueDelivering value
The Wentworth team developed construction friendly solutions within tight timeframes, supporting all phases of construction over a period of three years. Our role was vital in the interface of various parties including contractors and permanent works designers, identifying opportunities for improvements and bridging the gaps between construction and design.
Wentworth have been involved in the project both as direct consultants to Costain and to Keltbray, providing temporary works design on a variety of structures, such as overbridges, underbridges, precast BEBO arches, and small span culvert structures.

Key scopeKey scope
- Geotechnical engineering: Develop slope stability schemes for large excavations, foundation design of temporary structures and crane working platforms on various sites across the scheme.
- Temporary Works: Develop and implement temporary supports schemes for various bridges during construction, including lifting checks and construction sequence reviews for bridges, BEBO arches and culverts.
- Interface between new and old structures: Develop a construction sequence and temporary works to allow the construction of a new road bridge adjacent to an existing one at Tolgroggan.
- Demolition: Develop a demolition scheme for a tree span concrete bridge adjacent to a new bridge at Tolgroggan.
- Rebar Stability: Prepare a design method that accelerated the construction of bridge abutments using lattice rebar towers.
- Lifting checks: Lifting point checks on multiple bridge beams for various bridge structures on the scheme.

Key challenges and solutionsKey challenges and solutions
- Complex interface: Constructing a new 32m span bridge 5m way from an existing 1970s bridge required complex interface during the construction of the new bridge abutments. We provided efficient detailing solutions, maximining the working space and identifying key constraints on the construction sequence.
- Coordinating multiple parties: Understanding the needs of each party involved in the process and finding an ultimate solution that met the expectations of contractors, sub-contractors, local authorities and permanent works designers. Our excellent communication and technical ability were key to bridge any gaps between the various parties and scope.
- Minimise disruption to live road: A30 is a busy road, and we managed to minimise the disruption by promoting off site manufacturing and assembly techniques, supported by our temporary works solutions.
